Tjernlund Upgrades Automatic Modulating Fan Controllers

The improvements save energy for building owners and occupants

MPC Series fan controllers from Tjernlund Products have replaced the company’s model CPC-3 controller and offer an improved way to automatically control fan speed to conserve energy. fan controllers

Models MPC and MPCI automatic pressure-based fan controllers are for exhaust and supply air systems. Benefits include reduced cost, simplified plug-and-play installation, two-button set point adjustment, and an integrated pressure transducer plus a choice of model (MPCI) with burner interlock and model (MPC) without burner interlock.

Automatic fan controllers save energy by monitoring pressure in exhaust and supply air vents and outputting a signal to adjust fan speed to maintain a desired chase/vent pressure set point as volumes change. Power consumption can be reduced by more than 50% compared to traditional fixed speed exhaust fans. What’s more, significant savings from conditioning smaller volumes of make-up air is achieved. Automatic fan speed control is commonly specified for exhaust chases in high-rises, apartments, and hotels. Specific applications include: bathrooms, kitchens, clothes dryers, and common vented boilers/water heaters.

MPC Series models can be used directly with most ECM powered fans or in conjunction with a VFD to control the speed of three-phase motor powered fans. Pressure set point is controlled to within 0.01″ W.C.

Both MPC models include a controller with integral pressure transducer factory-wired into field wiring ready terminal strips. Factory presets that fit a majority of applications can be adjusted with the simple two-button interface.

Additionally, MPC controllers feature 18-gauge galvanized steel electrical enclosures with hinged access doors. Large run and fault indicators are visible with access door closed. A fault indicator also emits an audible alarm. The alarm contacts can be tied to a building management system.

Model MPCI includes a burner circuit interlock for mechanical draft and combustion air applications. Expansion modules are available so multiple burner circuits can be interlocked with a single MPCI Controller.
